La Giralda, the bell tower of the Cathedral of Seville, is an ancient minaret covered with baked brick that is the symbol and the most famous monument of the city. The tower-minaret reflects the diverse cultures that have dominated the city: the main section, the Islamic one, is the oldest part, it dates from the mid-1100, and is built using stones from the ruins of the Roman city of Italica.
The main feature of the Giralda is not to have stairs, but ramps, 34 in total, which enabled the muezzin to climb on a horse. The minaret became a Christian bell tower around 1400. The Tower of almost a hundred meters has a base of over 15 meters. The statue, which gives its name to the tower is of 1568: once it turned with the weather, hence the name Giralda, which then became the proper name of the entire building.
