
Vigo, in Galicia, Spain, is a relatively new city, although it was an ancient Roman settlement. With less than 300 000 inhabitants, in northwest Spain, Vigo is an important commercial town and fishing port, located in the middle of a “ria”, a fjord, which protects it from the open sea. Vigo is located about forty kilometers from the border with Portugal.
The economy of this Galician town is based on the automotive industry (PSA Peugeot Citroën), the port and tourism: Vigo is famous for its cultural scene and night life. The latter mainly develops in three quarters and hardly begins before midnight.
In the area of Churruca, full of pubs and bars where you can listen and dance with music of all types, frequented by young people of Erasmus scholarships, there is one of the most famous venues in the city, The Irish Pub. In the district of Vinos, clubs are more oriented to a rock, punk and heavy style of music. However, also the cultural activities are a strength of this Spanish city. In addition to the many trade fairs organized by the IFEVI, Instituto Feiral de Vigo, there are several museums in town. The Verbum, museum of communication, the Marco for contemporary art and the beautiful Ethnographic Museum of art and culture.
There are many tourist attractions in the city. Among these, many churches: Santiago de Bembrive, San Salvador de Coruxo and Santa Cristina de Lavadores; the fishing port, the barrio de Berbès, an ancient district of fishermen, the castle on the hill of Castro and the Museo Municipal de Castrelos with works by local artists.
In the evening, those who love theater, will always find some good programming at the Ensalle and Leiden theaters. During the year are also held many international events, as the Jazz Festival or the Semana do Audiovisual.
The port of Vigo is a major commercial port, for fishing and tourism as well. From here, in the summer, ferries depart for the Cíes archipelago, at the beginning of the fjord, which are part of a natural reserve and can host only a limited number of tourists.
In the vicinity of Vigo, some twenty miles north, are located the capital of Galicia, Pontevedra, and several other tourist destinations, such as Monte Santa Tecla, Baiona, Guarda and Valença do Minho. Vigo is served by an airport, the Vigo-Peinador, about fifteen miles east of the city.
