A weekend in Basel is definitely well spent. The small city on the Rhine, in the north-western Switzerland, bordering France and Germany, is an important industrial center and is rich in places of tourist and cultural interest. Basel has a long history: it has Roman origins and has always had a strategic importance for its position on the great river Rhine
Basel, just under 170 000 inhabitants, is also the last river port for large vessels: especially important are the chemical and pharmaceutical industries that are based in this region between the German Baden-Wurttemberg and the French Alsace.
The cosmopolitan character of the town is immediately clear to those arriving at the airport. The Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg Airport is the only international airport run by three nations, Switzerland, France and Germany: in the center of the airport there is a customs area between Switzerland and France. In honor of this feature the airport is nicknamed Euroairport. Even the railways are 'cosmopolitan': there are three stations in the city, one for each country of origin.
From a tourist point of view, the city offers many places of interest, especially in the area between Markplatz and Münsterplatz on the left bank of the Rhine. Besides the cathedral, the Basler Münster, of medieval origin, here is the home of the University, the oldest in Switzerland, dating back to 1450, where studied, among others, Paracelsus, Erasmus of Rotterdam and Nietzsche.

Do not miss the numerous museums in Basel, some of which are of international importance, such as the Ethnographic Museum, Museum der Kulturen in Münsterplatz, which reopened in 2011 after two years of renovation and expansion. Many of the nearly forty museums are devoted to figurative arts.
Basel is also famous for the events that occur during the year. The Carnival of Basel, Basler Fasnacht, is the most important of all the Helvetic Confederation; Basler Herbstmesse is a great popular festival held in November in different squares of the historical centre and the town fair; Art Basel is considered the most important exhibition of works of art in the world.
But the most important event that brings thousands of tourists and city workers to town is BaselWorld, the World Watch and Jewellery Show, which takes place in spring in the areas of the Fair, located in the city centre. BaseWorld gathers more than 2 000 companies in an event that brings together more than 100 000 visitors from around the world.
For tourists visiting the city is available the BaselCard, which allows you to take advantage of special benefits, such as guided tours through the historical centre, free travel on ferries, free admission and discounts to major attractions, spas and reductions in many restaurants.
The hotel offer in Basel is very broad. In the period of the most important fairs, it may be hard to find free rooms in hotels in the centre of Basel without an advanced reservation. It's also important to remember that the price of 2 and 3 star hotels in Basel are quite high by international standards, but the service is always excellent. 4 and 5 star hotel in the centre of Basel are mainly frequented by business travelers for the wide availability of meeting spaces equipped with the best technologies of communication.
