Antalya, a city in southern Turkey, is considered the capital of turkish tourism. In high season there are over 2 million tourists on its beaches. Antalya is at the center of a great gulf overlooked by other important locations, such as Kumluca, Manavgat, Alanya, Anamur and Gazipasa.
The city of Antalya is perched on a cliff and is surrounded by mountains and forests. Antalya Airport, about fifteen miles from the centre, is an international airport very important for tourism in the area, which heads a dozen budget airlines.
The city of Antalya has over 600 000 inhabitants, but in summer it can accommodate up to over 2 million tourists. People don’t come only during the summer, because the climate and the historical and cultural attractions welcome tourists throughout the year.
In the city there are many monuments and places of interest worth visiting. As the Yivli Minare, a minaret housing the Gallery of Fine Arts; the monastery of the Whirling Dervishes, Mevlevi Tekke, near the clock tower, from which top you can admire a panorama of the city; the mosques Korkut and Tekeli Mehmet Paşa in the old city; the Roman port, where there are restaurants and taverns; the Kesik minaret; the Hidirlik Kulesi tower of the first century; Hadrian's Gate, Hadrianus Kapisa; the Suna and Inan Kıraç museum, with findings from the Ottoman era; and of course the Museum of Antalya, with prehistoric artifacts and works of Roman and Ottoman eras.

The city is very beautiful and well preserved, thanks to recent renovations started in the '70s along with the launch of tourism. The most striking area is the old quarter of Kaleiçi, where there are also the Balik Pazar Hamam and the Sefa Hamam. However, the beaches, and in particular Konyaalti Plaji and Lara Plaji, are the favorite place to stay, near which there are hotels, restaurants, bars and taverns open late at night and where you can find good food and fun.
Antalya is a good starting point for visiting some important historical locations in the Anatolian Plateau. Such as Termessos, in Güllük Mountains National Park, with the Karain cave inhabited over 25,000 years ago; Perge, about fifteen kilometers from Antalya, with numerous Hellenistic and Roman ruins; Aspendos, with the best Hellenistic and Roman theaters in Anatolia; Lara, with the waterfall of Dünen River which flows directly into the sea; Selge, an ancient Roman city, surrounded by mountains, Belek, with its spectacular beach; Side, charming little town where you buy carpets and handicrafts; Olympos , with the beach surrounded by pine trees.
