Bodrum, once called Halicarnassus, is a beautiful resort in the south-west of Turkey, located in the Gulf of Cos. Bodrum attracts hundreds of thousands of people, particularly in summer, and is frequented by foreign tourists, but also by wealthy Turkish tourists, to the point that it is called the St. Tropez of Turkey. The town is also accessible from Bodrum-Milas airport, about thirty miles north.
The town is dominated by a monumental medieval castle built by the Knights of Rhodes, which stands at the entrance of the bay. In the castle of St. Peter, of the fifteenth century, are displayed ceramic and glass artifacts recovered from ancient sunk merchant ships. Two areas of the castle are particularly interesting: the torture rooms and the harem with the hammam. Bodrum has always been an important location for the construction of boats and for this reason many boatyards still produce the typical boats of the site, the Tirhandil and the Gulet, the latter also used for tourist excursions along the coast.
One of the most interesting activities in Bodrum ... is shopping. The centre and the port area are characterized by many small alleys and squares lined with fashionable shops of textiles, clothing, carpets, sandals, kilim, pearls and stones. The city has a bohemian style, with restaurants and bars with outdoor tables, where drinks and cocktails are offered in Western style, but also Turkish specialties and fresh seafood.
